Description: Tamoxifen is prescribed for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, post-surgery and radiation therapy breast cancer, and for reducing the risk of breast cancer in high-risk patients. This medication impedes the growth of breast cancer by interfering with estrogen's effects on breast tissue.

Administration: Before starting tamoxifen and with each refill, carefully read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. If you have any queries, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Take this medication orally, with or without food, usually once or twice daily for 5 years or as directed by your doctor. Dosages exceeding 20 milligrams daily are typically divided and taken twice daily. If using the liquid form, measure the dose precisely with a special measuring device/spoon to ensure accurate dosing. Do not use a household spoon. Dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. Consistently use this medication to derive maximum benefit. Take it at the same time(s) daily to aid in remembering. If you experience increased bone/cancer pain or disease flare-up after starting tamoxifen for metastatic breast cancer, promptly inform your doctor. These symptoms may indicate a positive response to the medication and often resolve quickly.

Precautions: Tamoxifen can be absorbed through the skin and lungs; therefore, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not handle this medication or inhale dust from the tablets. Inform your doctor immediately if your condition worsens, such as the development of new breast lumps.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include hot flashes, nausea, leg cramps, muscle aches, hair thinning, headache, and numb/tingling skin. Men may experience a loss of sexual ability/interest. Notify your doctor if these effects persist or worsen. Serious side effects may include vision changes, eye pain, easy bruising/bleeding, mental/mood changes, swelling of ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, dark urine, yellowing eyes/skin, signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat), or allergic reactions such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you observe any of these rare but severe side effects, seek immediate medical attention.
