This medication is prescribed for the treatment of certain types of breast cancer, such as hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, in postmenopausal women. Letrozole is also employed to help prevent the cancer from recurring.
Certain breast cancers are stimulated to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Letrozole works by reducing the production of estrogen in the body, thereby slowing down or reversing the growth of these breast cancers.
