Androgens, originating from the Greek term “andr” denoting “man,” represent a vital class of natural or synthetic steroid hormones crucial for the development and sustenance of male traits in vertebrates. These hormones interact with androgen receptors, exerting influence over various physiological processes:

Testosterone: Serving as the primary androgen in males, testosterone undergoes synthesis within the testes, ovaries, and adrenal glands. Particularly during puberty, it contributes significantly to the emergence of male secondary sexual characteristics, encompassing traits like facial hair growth, deepening of the voice, and muscular development.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT): Equally pivotal in male maturation, DHT emerges through the conversion of testosterone. During fetal development, it drives the differentiation of anatomical structures such as the penis, scrotum, and prostate. In adulthood, DHT influences phenomena like male pattern baldness, prostate enlargement, and sebaceous gland activity.

Androstenedione: Originating from the testes, adrenal cortex, and ovaries, androstenedione functions as a precursor to both androgens and estrogens. Additionally, it serves as the foundational structure for estrone.

Adrenal Androgens: These 19-carbon steroids, encompassing dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), are synthesized within the adrenal cortex. While exhibiting modest steroid activity, they contribute to overall androgenic levels.

Female Androgens: Despite the predominant association of androgens with male physiology, females also harbor these hormones (albeit at diminished levels). Androgens in females play a role in regulating libido, sexual arousal, and overall well-being.
